The precondition for forgiveness is the willingness to abandon hoping for a better past. Once we give up thinking the past will somehow change because we want it to, opportunities for moving on present themselves. Moving on by forgiving does not imply that we have forgotten the past, nor does it suggest we can't learn from it. It simply means that the act of forgiveness is made possible only when we erase the false hope that we can alter what has already happened. Thus a powerful impediment to further growth and learning is removed.
